What is the difference between PRP and PRF?
Both are extracted from the a patient’s blood sample taken in our clinic, and both have a very strong evidence base and track record in regenerative and aesthetic medicine. Both are prepared in a centrifuge and both use the release of growth factors from platelets to improve skin and hair quality.
PRF provides a higher concentration of platelets, white blood cells, and fibrin than PRP, allowing for a slow-release of growth factors that continue working for days after treatment. This results in longer-lasting, natural improvements in skin texture, volume, and elasticity.
The difference between PRP and PRF cannot be understated. What makes these substances special are the natural growth factors that they contain. 95% of these growth factors are released in the last step of clotting during fibrin polymerization, a step which is blocked in PRP due to the use of anticoagulant additives.
PRF on the other hand contains no additives at all, and the unique preparation used for extraction of PRF requires no added anticoagulant. The result is a matrix of fibrin, platelets, white blood cells, and mesenchymal stem cells that produce vastly more growth factors than PRP. What this means for the patient is more collagen production and improvement in skin quality.
Further, PRP releases its growth factors all at once, limiting its duration of action. PRF on the other hand forms a matrix that slowly releases growth factors over the course of 2 weeks, greatly increases its biostimulatory abilities.
The drawback to PRF is the relatively small yield compared to PRP, so we typically reserve PRP for larger surface area treatments such as full face micro needling, and hair restoration therapy, and then reserve PRF for focused areas, like the under-eye and the frontal hair line.
How does it work?
We perform our PRF treatments by drawing a sample of your blood and separating it into its vital components using a special Health Canada approved centrifuge made specifically for isolating PRP and PRF of the highest quality. We extract the blood and process the sample using special temperature controlled equipment to ensure the quality of the sample is maintained. We then use a combination of cannula and needle to place the purified PRP and/or PRF into the treatment area, which is where the magic really happens.
How Often Do You Need PRP / PRF?
To achieve the best results, we recommend an initial series of 3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. For long-term maintenance, a single session every 6-12 months helps sustain youthful, glowing skin.
